Clinical and endoscopic profile of patient Undergoing Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, hospital based, single centric cross-sectional study

Introduction: Upper gastrointestinal endoscopic procedure is one of the most commonly performed procedure in tertiary center for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. Endoscopic procedures are performed in both routine and emergency basis based on clinical condition of the patient. Nausea, vomiting, Pain abdomen, dyspepsia and Gastrointestinal bleedings are common presentations of any patient presented to hospital with gastrointestinal disease who requires endoscopic evaluation. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and demographic profile of patient undergoing UGI endoscopy.
Method: This was the hospital based analytical cross sectional study conducted in department of internal medicine at Pokhara academy of health sciences, western regional hospital Pokhara Kaski Nepal from May 2024 to April 2025 among the patient underdoing Upper Gastro intestinal endoscopy. The collected data were analyzed with statistical packages for the social studies (SPSS) version 23 for results.
Results: Out of 288 participants enrolled in our study,162 (56%)were Male and 126(44%) were Female. Participants of age 10 to 99 years were included in the study with Mean age of 48.6 years. Most common indication for UGI endoscopy was pain abdomen 127(44%) followed by liver disease 49(17%) and Anemia 40(14%). Gastritis was the common endoscopic finding n=105(36%), followed by esophageal varices n=51(18%), gastric ulcer n=51(18%)and normal UGI endoscopic findings in n=26(9%) of the study population.
Conclusion: Pain abdomen was the most common endoscopic indication (n=127,44.09%) for patient undergoing Upper Gastrointestinal endoscopy in our hospital. Gastritis (n=105,36%)was the commonest endoscopic finding.
